Recently I've been going through my bookshelf and reading books that I haven't gotten around to yet. It's revived a passion for reading and I'm loving it. In an effort to help me get back into reading I've started with smaller books, that's when i came across Kuro Zakuro by Yoshinori Natsume.
This is the first manga (a Japanese that I have ever read and I have to say that I loved it. I was given this volume of manga this at a convention I attended a few years back. I never ended up reading this book at the time and I eventually forgot that I even had it! Now I am glad to have read it and am on the look out for the next episode.
This is a story about a wimpy boy who is bullied at school. He is naturally kindhearted but this causes him to be walked all over by everyone he knows. Unknowingly he swallows something called a 'demon seed', which begins to transform him into an ogre - a creature that is no longer human. The early affects of his transformation show up as inhuman strength and a willingness to defend himself, but quickly evolved into a passion for violence. It also comes with a strong hunger for meat. Mikato tries to fight these new urges, especially after meeting another ogre who had fully developed and the hunter that kills him. A new student arrives at school, who is also hunting ogres and so the fight for Mikato's humanity and secret begins!
It's an emotional ride and very violent, which I don't mind at all. This story tackles the human desire for power, the conflict between self interest and relationships, and the battle for hope to get through the impossible. I loved reading about a character who began as a powerless individual how was soon fighting his suddenly gained power and what it was turning him into.
I also just enjoyed reading a manga! Because it's Japanese literature it's read from right to left (still top to bottom though). I read the whole book in about half an hour which was both satisfying and enjoyable.
Have you read manga? If so what are your thoughts on it? If not, would you? Let me know in the comments :)
